What You Need to Know about the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2020

The Nordstrom Anniversary sale is a month away, and I’m so excited!  Nordstrom is one of my absolute favorite retailers to shop, and the Nordstrom Anniversary sale (the NSALE) is one of the shopping highlights of the year for me as well as thousands of others!  During this sale, there are tons of fabulous deals on NEW fall and winter items from top brands like Madewell, Marc Fisher, Tory Burch, Kendra Scott, and many, many more!

During these next four weeks, I’m going to be posting a blog post to discuss and prepare everyone for the sale by covering what you need to know (today’s post), the fall/winter 2020 trends to look out for, how I take inventory of my current closet, what I have my eyes on based on the preview, and some of my favorite purchases from last year’s NSALE.

What is the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale?

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (NSALE for short) happens once a year, every year right before the fall season.  It’s unlike any other sale because of the items released.  While most sales only happen after the season with discounts on pieces that didn’t sell well or that the brand has too much stock of, the NSALE launches brand new items at discounted prices before the fall season even begins.  They are never before seen items from brand new collections from tons of brands, so the NSALE only focuses on items for those seasons.  After the sale, these same pieces will be marked up to their regular prices and won’t be discounted again until spring of the following year.

This sale is the best time to stock up on fall and winter staples because these items are on sale for up to 30-50% off their regular prices.  Some of the NSALE brands are Tory Burch, Blank NYC, Steve Madden, Marc Fisher, Nike, Adidas, Quay, AG Jeans, and more.  During the sale, you can find deals on summer-to-fall transition pieces, amazing fall and winter staple pieces you’ll wear for years to come, basics every closet needs, and designer denim and footwear.

When Does the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Start?

First, it’s important to note that the NSale Catalog will be digital this year, and everyone will have access to it!  You will be able to see everything included in the sale starting July 24th.  This gives you the opportunity to save your favorite items to your wishlist and shop directly from there (based on your budget we will discuss in Friday’s NSALE post).

Normally is always in July; however, because of the wild year we’ve had with corona, the sale will be in August. On August 4th, Icon Reward members will have early access, then Ambassadors, Influencers, and Insiders.  Also, this year, Nordstrom extended the early access shopping, meaning cardholders get to shop the sale an extra TWO weeks before the public. Below I included Nordstrom’s graphic showing the time lines for each tier of cardmember early access:

**NOTE: ALL PURCHASES DURING THE PRE-ACCESS SALE DATES WILL HAVE TO BE ON YOUR NORDSTROM CREDIT OR DEBIT CARD**

Three Steps to Prepare for the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

1. Apply for the Nordstrom credit card – like right now! if you want to shop the best inventory before sizes sell out, I highly recommend getting the card so you can shop the sale before August 19th.  Most of these deals sell out sizes by the end of the first day of Early Access. And, Occasionally, there will be a restock of the most popular items, but there is NEVER any guarantee. (Last year, I know they didn’t restock anything until after the NSALE was over.)  I’ve had my Nordstrom card for a few years now and can say with confidence that having the card makes the NSALE shopping experience so much better.  When I shopped the sale before having the card, I could only shop during the public portion and a large number of items were picked over, and I couldn’t find my size in much of anything.

2. Go through the Nordstrom catalog beforehand – write a list of the items that sold out last year that you weren’t able to purchase in your size – tops, shoes, sweaters, Zella leggings, vests and coats, cozy cardigans, etc.  Brands make items that are specifically for the anniversary sale and once they’re sold out, they’re gone (Some restocks do happen but it’s slim and sometimes doesn’t include items on your shopping list).  It’s important to note that the catalog doesn’t include every item that will be included in the sale (all items are in the preview on July 24th), but looking at the catalog gives you a good idea of the trends you can expect to see.

3. Go through your closet and see what you actually need – write out a list of the items you wore the most last fall and winter – use this as a guide to your purchases this year.  For example, I wore the heck out of my Spanx faux leather leggings and Sam Edelman tan western booties I purchased last NSALE, so I’ll look at purchasing a new pair of each.  On the contrary, I have multiple chunky-knit off-white sweaters, and, as much as I would love to purchase another (can you say obsessed?), I need another like I need a hole in the head, so I’ll be steering clear of those.  I also suggest writing out a list of the items that are fall and winter staple pieces that are missing from your closet.  The NSALE is a great time to pick up the basics at amazing prices.

Alright, these are the main details I have for y’all regarding the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.  This really is the best time to stock up on fall and winter staples before brands raise all of their prices.  On Friday, I’ll be posting my top 10 tips for shopping the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (and any other sale).
